Joyceborough Fundraising Appeal 2021
Supporting the James Joyce Cultural Centre, Dublin
"I am trying to give people some kind of intellectual pleasure or spiritual enjoyment by converting the bread of everyday life into something that has a permanent artistic life of its own … for their mental, moral, and spiritual uplift."
- James Joyce
In March 2021, ‘Joyceborough’ celebrates its first anniversary online after operating as a terrestrial James Joyce Reading Group since 2010.
We’re marking the anniversary with this ‘Bloomsday 2021 Appeal’ and the nominated beneficiary is the James Joyce Cultural Centre (JJCC), Dublin.
Bloomsday 2021 will be the second Bloomsday (and we hope the last) to take place under pandemic restrictions. These controls have seen the arts/culture creative community put on virtual ‘life support’ and reduced to almost a state of paralysis. It was an atmosphere of paralysis that sparked for Joyce the expression of his creativity and genius, epiphanising in the process the city in which he was formed.
This appeal is inspired by that Joycean-spirited response to adversity and the accompanying will to bring forth epiphanies. "We are" as Richard Ellmann famously wrote, " still learning to be James Joyce's contemporaries"
